ErP stands for Energy-related Products. It refers to the Energy-related Products Directive (ErP) 2009/125/EC, which replaced the older Energy-using Products Directive (EuP) in November 2009. The original EuP was implemented in 2005 to meet requirements of the Kyoto Protocol for reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The ErP expanded the range of products covered compared to the EuP. The EuP only covered products that directly consumed energy. The ErP also includes products related to energy, like water-saving taps. The goal is regulating the entire supply chain of products: design, production, transport, packaging, storage, etc.
Previous ErP directives EC 244/2009, EC 245/2009, EU 1194/2012 and the Energy Label directive EU 874/2012 were in effect for over 10 years. Recently, the European Commission reviewed these regulations after analyzing lighting products’ technical, environmental, and economic aspects, as well as real-life user behavior. This led to new ErP directives EU 2019/2020 and the energy label directive EU 2019/2015.
